Tuesday’s showdown between BYU and No. 23 Kansas was in primetime on ESPN, and the whole nation watched as the Cougars put on an absolute show in the 91-57 home victory.
It was the first time the Jayhawks had visited the Marriott Center, and they witnessed first hand how hard it is to win in front of 18,000 fans in Provo.
After the big win, BYU head coach Kevin Young put on the headset and spoke with Scott Van Pelt who featured the Cougars on SportsCenter.
BYU Upsets No. 23 Kansas In Record-Setting Game — Here’s All The Reactions
SVP: BYU Should Be Ranked
Scott Van Pelt (SVP) started the show with some noteworthy stats such as it was the first game the Cougars had with 20+ assists and 10+ steals against a ranked opponent in the past 25 years.
SVP also noted that the Kansas loss was the fourth consecutive for the Jayhawks to unranked opponents on the road. However, the SportsCenter host made sure to show the Cougars some loves as he mentioned he has been following the team throughout the season, including watching last week’s win against a red-hot Kansas State team at home.
“The fact that their isn’t a number (ranking) next to BYU’s name is frankly dumb because that’s a really good team,” SVP said. “I’ve been doing this for God knows how long. It feels like forever. I have never seen a Bill Self team get beat like that.”

BYU is currently on the outside looking in when it comes to a Top 25 ranking. In addition, when looking at several metrics. BYU is ranked No. 26 in ESPN’s basketball power index (up four spots) and No. 31 in KenPom rankings and No. 31 in the NET (up five spots from yesterday). But in the end, the only thing that matters is the Cougars seeding in NCAA Tournament next month.
With the victory Tuesday night, BYU improves to 18-8 overall and 9-6 in Big 12 play. Next up for the Cougars is a another Top 25 battle, this time against No. 19 Arizona in a rematch after facing the Wildcats two weeks ago.
A win against the Wildcats on the road would likely make BYU a lock for the NCAA Tournament, but as we know with Big 12 play, no game is a gimme.
Notes: Tuesday was just the seventh all-time meeting between the two schools with Kansas holding a 4-3 lead in the series. However, BYU has won back-to-back games since joining the Big 12 Conference, including ending multiple streaks in the road win at No. 7 Kansas last year. The Cougars ended the Jayhawks 19-game home winning streak, the 67-game home winning streak against unranked opponents and the 82-game home winning streak when leading at the half.
