In the final game of the Beehive Classic, BYU not only walked out with a perfect 3-0 record in the annual tournament, but also extended another school record in the process as the Cougars took down Utah State, 68-64 in front of 10,291 fans inside Vivint Smart Home Arena.

The back-and-forth game, came down to the final minute in what was a nail-bitting contest between both sides. But in the end, a three-pointer by Alex Barcello with 27 seconds to play gave the Cougars all they needed to pull out the win.

On the game-winning play, Barcello dribbled around Utah State’ 1-3-1 zone before passing the ball off to Dalton Nixon. Wanting to space the floor, Barcello settled into the corner as Nixon passed the ball right back. With the game on the line, Barcello — who was just 2 of 8 from the field before that shot — didn’t hesitate as he rose up and made the shot.

“It was unbelievable,” Barcello said after the game. “I didn’t start off the game too hot, but I love my guys, I love my team and I love my coaching staff. They pick me up. They told me to trust it. They believe in me and they knew my shots were eventually going to fall. Nobody came out on me so I just shot the shot knowing that my teammates believed in me and it went in.”

Barcell’s 3-pointer was BYU’s 11th of the night which helped extend a record as the Cougars have now made 10-plus 3-pointers in six consecutive games. BYU finished the night going 11-29 from downtown for 39.3%. The last time the Cougars did not make at least 10 3-pointers, was in a loss against Kansas, as BYU went 9-for-33 in the semifinal game of the Maui Invitational.

Despite being doubled-teammed all night, BYU’s Yoeli Childs still finished the night with a double-double as the senior had a game-high 20 points to go with 10 rebounds. It was Childs’ second game this season with 20-plus points and 35th of his career to give him the eighth-most 20-point games in BYU history. It was also his third consecutive double-double of the season.

TJ Haws chipped in with 16 points, five assists and two steals, including four 3-pointers. Barcello scored seven points, five of them in the final two minutes and Zac Seljaas, Connor Harding and Kolby Lee all had six points a piece in the win.

The victory is BYU’s eighth consecutive win against USU and made the Cougars 3-0 in the short history of the Beehive Classic.

USU star center Neemias Queta played well as the sophomore finished the game with 11 points and nine rebounds in just 23 minutes. It was his longest stint of the season as the 7-foot-1, 245-pound center continues to work his way back from an offseason knee injury.
