The first week of the College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday night with a surprise decision by the committee.
Although Alabama is ranked No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches’ Polls, Georgia, just one of five unbeaten teams left, was chosen as the top-ranked team followed by No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Notre Dame and the defending National Champions, No. 4 Clemson.
Oklahoma sits right behind at No. 5 followed by No. 6 Ohio State and No. 7 Penn State. Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield told reporters on Monday that he believes his team, which beat Ohio State on the road earlier this year, deserved to be ranked ahead of the Buckeyes, since both have 7-1 records. While the AP and Coaches’ Polls did not share the same opinion as Mayfield, the CFP Committee did.
“For the teams five through seven, their head-to-head results were very important to the committee,” CFP committee chairman Kirby Hocutt said.
Despite losing to Iowa State, the Horned Frogs didn’t fall as much as expected as TCU came in at No. 8, followed by No. 9 Wisconsin and No. 10 Miami. While some are claiming that “The U is back,” Miami still has a lot of work to do after sub-par performances against North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Syracuse. However, next week’s home showdown against Notre Dame would go a long way in silencing any doubters.
If the College Football Playoff started today, No. 1 Georgia would face No. 4 Clemson and No. 2 Alabama would take on No. 3 Notre Dame.
