Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and New England’s Tom Brady have has been one of the best quarterback success stories in NFL history.

Brady, who has broken or tied several NFL records, was passed on a number of teams before he was chosen in the sixth round. Romo, a 14-year veteran out of Eastern Illinois, wasn’t even drafted and used that motivation to climb the NFL ranks and become one of the best quarterbacks in Cowboys history.

While Brady continues to rewrite the record books, Romo, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, has been going down a different path after conceding the starting role to rookie Dak Prescott in a heartfelt press conference where he not only wished Prescott the best of luck, but also gave us a valuable reminder about hard work and the need to prove yourself every day.

“You see football is a meritocracy,” Romo said in his press conference. “You aren’t handed anything. You earn everything every single day single day oven and over again. You have to prove it. That’s the way that the NFL, that’s the way that football works. A great example of this is Dak Prescott and what he’s done. He’s earned the right to be our quarterback. As hard as that is for me to say, he’s earned that right. He’s guided our team to an 8-1 record and that’s hard to do.

“We all know something magical is happening to our team. I’m not going to allow this situation to negatively affect Dak or this football team by becoming a constant distraction. I think Dak knows that I have his back. And I think I know that he has mine. Ultimately, it’s about the team. It’s what we’ve preached our entire lives.”

Romo has been hit hard over his career with a plethora of broken bones, fractures and even a punctured lung.

But through it all, the 36-year-old quarterback made it clear that he still wants to play the game that he loves and that desire is bigger than it’s ever been.

“If you think for a second that I don’t want to be out there, then you’ve probably never felt the pure ecstasy of competing and winning,” he said. “That hasn’t left me. In fact it may burn more now than ever.”
