The fifth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels got sweet revenge in a 90-83 home victory over No. 17 Duke at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

UNC (26-6, 14-4) came into Saturday’s game having already clinched the outright ACC regular-season title, but that didn’t stop one of college basketball’s most storied rivalries from playing another classic game.

With the win, the Tar Heels and Blue Devils have now each won 49 games over the last 98 contests played between both programs.

Junior guard Joel Berry II led the way for the Tar Heels with a team-high 28 points and made a game-high five 3-pointers. Senior forward Isaiah Hicks added 21 points, nine rebounds, and also recorded his 1,000th career point in the win on Senior Night.

Duke had players who scored in double figures. Sophomore guard Luke Kennard led the way with 28 points, Frank Jackson added 15 points and Grayson Allen chipped in with 14.

The loss was costly for the Blue Devils as they dropped to the No. 5 seed and will miss out on a double bye in the ACC tournament.

The bad news doesn’t stop there with Duke now on the wrong side of history. According to ESPN Stats & Info, the loser of the second game between both programs has never won a national title.

The rivalry game got pretty heated during the closing minutes of the first half.

Allen, who is always in the headlines, drew a controversial foul on UNC guard Brandon Robinson despite elbowing him in the face which resulted in a technical foul for the junior guard.  The season series is now tied 1-1, but don’t count out at least one more contest (ACC or NCAA Tournament) between both programs with the way both teams are currently playing.
