Well that didn’t go exactly as planned for the Golden State Warriors.
After acquiring Kevin Durant from the Oklahoma City Thunder in the offseason, fans finally got the chance to see the 2014 NBA MVP player in action alongside sharpshooters Klay Thompson and reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry.
But opening night wasn’t what they quite had envisioned as the San Antonio Spurs came away with a dominating 129-100 victory at Oracle Arena Tuesday night.
Kawhi Leonard scored a career-high 35 points to lead the Spurs and helped spoil Durant’s long-awaited debut. The dominating performance sent fans home early as the Spurs continued to extend their lead throughout the game. LaMarcus Aldridge added 26 points and 14 rebounds in the win for the Spurs.
Guard Jonathon Simmons came off the bench to score 20 points, including a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give the Spurs a 64-46 lead.
And that wasn’t the only highlight of the day.
The 27-year-old blocked Curry’s layup attempt in the third quarter and gave fans flashbacks to the last year’s NBA Finals game when LeBron James blocked a layup attempt to seal the win for the Cavaliers.

Simmons then followed it up late in the fourth quarter with the dunk of the year as he blew past his defender and then slammed it home on Javale Mcgee.

Durant finished the game with 27 points and 10 rebounds, but looked a little out of sync with his new teammates. Curry added 26 points but was just 3 for 10 from downtown. Draymond Green had 18 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, while Klay Thompson was limited to just 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting.
