Playing at home on senior night, No. 19 BYU made sure to give players and fans a nice going out present as the Cougars rolled to a 30-18 victory Saturday night against Houston at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Quarterback Jake Retzlaff didn’t play his best, however, the junior led the way both on the ground and through the air as the dual-threat quarterback ran for two touchdowns and threw for 167 yards to lead the 19th-ranked Cougars to their 10th victory of the season. The two rushing touchdowns also moved Retzlaff into a 3-way tie (John Beck and Jaren Hall) for 10th most career rushing touchdowns by a BYU quarterback.

Running back LJ Martin had a game-high 87 yards on the ground and Chase Roberts led the way with three catches for 76 yards. For the first time this season, BYU lost three fumbles in a game. The uncharacteristic string of turnovers, coupled with numerous dropped passes, kept the Cougars from pulling away from Houston until late.

With a 10-2 regular season record, BYU now has its 19th season with 10+ wins, and third in the last five years. Kalani Sitake’s record at BYU over the last 5 seasons is 44-18 (.710). However, despite the victory, BYU won’t play in the conference championship game due to the way the tiebreakers fell. Iowa State and Arizona State will meet in the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday despite the 4-way tie with BYU and Colorado.

On defense, the Cougars forced four turnovers, including two late in the fourth quarter to help snap a two-game losing streak. The four turnovers ties BYU’s season high which was set against Arizona in October. The Cougars now have eight games this season where they’ve had multiple turnovers gained.

On special teams, Talan Alfrey’s 58-yard onside kick return for a touchdown gives BYU three touchdowns on the season– tying the all-time high which was set in 1961. BYU has only had multiple kickoff returns for a touchdown in three seasons: 1961 (3), 1988 (2) and 2024 (3). The Cougars are also the only team in the FBS with three kickoffs returned for touchdowns this year.

Here’s all the reactions to BYU’s win over Houston, in addition to Cougar fans finding out that the team will miss the Big 12 title game due to how the tiebreakers fell.
