They don’t call the Rose Bowl “The Granddaddy of Them All” for no reason.

Monday’s epic Rose Bowl game between No. 5 Penn State and No. 9 USC was an instant classic with a number of record-setting performances.

With the game all tied up at 49, and with just two seconds left in the game, USC’s Matt Boermeester drilled a 46-yard field goal as time expired to give the Trojans an incredible come-from-behind victory in the highest-scoring Rose Bowl ever played.

Freshman Sam Darnold passed for 453 yards and a Rose Bowl record five touchdowns to lead USC to its ninth consecutive victory.  Darnold threw a 27-yard touchdown strike to Deontay Burnett to tie the game up with 1:20 to play. The freshman capped an 80-yard drive that last just 38 seconds without any timeouts.

Penn State wasn’t looking to go to overtime and went to setup a potential game-winning field goal with just over a minute to play.

But USC had other plans as Leon McQuay III intercepted a deep pass by Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley and returned it 32 yards to the Penn State 33-yard line with 27 seconds left to play to set up Boermeester’s game-winning field goal in front of 90,095 screaming fans.

Here’s some of the top highlights from the game.
