As Kyle Whittingham would say: “Next man up.”

And that’s exactly what Utah did against Oregon Saturday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Despite losing their starting quarterback and running back to season-ending injuries this week, the Utes didn’t make any excuses as the team came back and rallied for a thrilling 32-25 victory over the Ducks.

Utah quarterback Jason Shelley’s starting debut was a big success as the freshman completed 18-of-31 passes for 262 yards to go with two rushing touchdowns.

Filling in for Zack Moss, junior running back Armand Shyne had a “shining” debut as he rushed 26 times for 174 yards.

With the win, Utah remains in the hunt for the Pac-12 South championship. The Utes need a win at Colorado next weekend combined with a loss by Arizona State to either Oregon or Arizona.

To add the cherry on top, Utah kicker Matt Gay had a career night as he broke the school record with six field goals. The senior had 20 of Utah’s 32 points on the night.
