We are just a little over 15 weeks away before BYU and LSU square off Sept. 2 at NRG Stadium, home of the NFL’s Houston Texans. It will be the first-ever meeting on the gridiron between both storied football programs.

While fans and players are already looking forward to the big game, the contest just got even more intriguing Monday afternoon.

Highly-touted quarterback Zadock Dinkelmann — who committed to play for LSU when he was in eighth grade under head coach Les Miles at the time — is now following in his uncle’s footsteps — 1990 Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer — after he announced that he was joining the Cougars’ 2018 recruiting class:

The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder is a 3-star prospect by some scouting services and a 4-star by others. Either way, the kid can flat out play which is why one of the top SEC schools offered him at such a young age. Texas was showing interest in him and Dinkelmann even took some unofficial visits to Alabama.

Now Dinkelmann will call Provo, Utah home where he will learn under Detmer, the Cougars’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Sources say Dinklemann isn’t LDS so he won’t be going on a church mission prior to enrolling. The highly-touted recruit will likely be battling it out with gun-slinger Kody Wilstead and his cousin Koy Detmer Jr. for the starting spot once junior quarterback Tanner Mangum graduates or leaves early for the NFL Draft. With Dinkelmann’s commitment, BYU’s 2018 recruiting class now ranks in the Top 25.

While the upcoming game isn’t for another three months, the Cougars picked up some bragging rights with a recruiting victory over the Tigers. While the new LSU coaching change had an impact on Dinkelmann’s decision, it was still tough to see him leave for some LSU fans, while others didn’t hold anything back.

“BYU can have him. We’ll stomp them in September anyways,” wrote one fan on an LSU message board.
