Utah Mammoth — Tusks up!
After over a year of anticipation and community involvement, the NHL’s newest franchise has officially unveiled its permanent identity: the Utah Mammoth.
The announcement concludes a 13-month rebranding process that included trademark issues and an extensive fan voting campaign. More than 850,000 votes were cast across multiple rounds to help determine the team’s new name.
Previously known as the Utah Hockey Club, a placeholder name used for the 2024-25 season, the franchise was purchased and relocated from Arizona by Smith Entertainment Group. Owners Ryan and Ashley Smith highlighted the unique process in a statement, noting that it involved four rounds of community input and even feedback on potential logos. “The community chose the Utah Mammoth brand,” they said, adding that the name reflects the team’s identity and aspirations.
To celebrate the launch, Utah began selling limited merchandise such as T-shirts, hats, and hoodies at its Delta Center team store on Wednesday. Jerseys featuring the new Mammoth branding will be available later this offseason and will debut at the NHL Draft in June, where Utah will pick fourth overall, having won the second lottery draw earlier this week.
The team will also introduce a Mammoth-themed mascot at home games next season, with more details to be shared in the coming months.
The name “Mammoth” — which was accidentally leaked on the team’s YouTube channel last week — was inspired by the ancient mammoths that once roamed Utah over 10,000 years ago. Fossils have been discovered across the state, including a full skeleton found in Huntington Canyon in 1988. The team noted that mammoths could run in herds at over 25 miles per hour, a speed comparable to that of NHL players.
Instead of “Mammoths,” the franchise chose the singular “Mammoth” to represent unity and collective strength.
The new logo, a stylized mammoth head with a curved tusk, includes several hidden design elements: the Wasatch Mountains form the top of the head, the state silhouette and an “M” appear in negative space, and the tusk curves into a “U” for Utah. The rallying cry for fans will be “Tusks Up.”
On the ice, Utah will wear the Mammoth logo on home jerseys and “Utah” wordmark on away jerseys, making them one of just two NHL teams (alongside the Carolina Hurricanes) with a different design for home and away uniforms. The team says this approach highlights their commitment to representing Utah while on the road.
