BYU fumbled it away.
Literally.
Coming into the game without losing a fumble the entire season, the 10th-ranked Cougars fumbled the ball three times, threw an interception and turned the ball over on downs twice in a 26-17 loss to Boise State Saturday afternoon at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
The win snapped BYU’s 13-game home winning streak as the Broncos picked up their first Top-10 road win since 2001. BYU’s shot at a New Year’s Six bid also took a big hit as the Cougars will have to run the table to the rest of the way and get some help to make that happen.
Jaren Hall threw for a career-high 302 yards and a touchdown and Tyler Allgeier ran for 73 yards and a touchdown in the loss for BYU. The Cougars outgained Boise State 413-312 in total yards, but turnovers were the difference in this one.
BYU jumped out to a 10-0 lead and looked like it was going to cruise to another blowout victory over the Broncos. However, that all changed in the second quarter when the rain came down and changed the game. Hall couldn’t throw the ball and the run game got stuffed, managing less than 30 yards of total offense in the quarter.
With the sun out, the Cougars played much better in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late at that point.
Here’s how fans, the media, players and coaches reacted after the game:
BYU's last game with three fumbles lost came at Boise State in 2018 (lost 21-16).

Horrible loss for BYU.
They beat themselves.
No other way around it.

I’m frustrated due to the fact that that didn’t look anything like the BYU team I have cheered for all season. So many mental errors and poor ball security. I love my Cougars and trust Kalani will have them back and ready for next week. #BYUFootball #BeAGoldfish

Also, it’s gonna be awesome when BYU is in the Big12 and one loss doesn’t wreck the season.
But still, #GoCougs forever baby!

Not gonna lie, I am really pissed off. I can handle losing, but losing the way we did is going to bug me for a bit.
Boise deserves credit for taking advantage of our mistakes and making plays, but we made this game easy for them because of our own stupidity. #BYUFootball

BYU has scored exactly 17 points in each of its last two losses: 26-17 v. BSU today and 22-17 at Coastal Carolina in 2020.
Sitake-era BYU has lost 19 consecutive games when scoring 21 points or fewer.

BYU will finish with 413 total yards, and just 17 points.

BYU loss sends them from potential NY6 bowl to likely Independence Bowl. The Big 12 tie-ins can’t come soon enough.

Still lots of opportunity this season for #BYUFootball with upcoming games (including next week), but if we can't figure out how to get consistency on O back and for the defense to get some takeaways and off the field, it could get ugly at Baylor.
— Brett Hinton (@hintbw) October 9, 2021
This is exactly why the BIG 12 is such a big step in the right direction. BYU is going to the Independence Bowl regardless of if they win out. In 2 years, we would still be fighting for a conference championship and a NY6/CFP appearance. #GoCougs

5-1. Still love em. #GoCougs #BeatBaylor

Let’s all be honest. None of us had BYU being 5-1 to start the season. I’m totally happy with where we are right now.
