It was a shot that Jazz fans will never forget.
It was Game 6 of the 1997 Western Conference Finals with the Jazz holding a 3-2 series lead over the Houston Rockets with superstars Hakeem Olajuwon and Charles Barkley.
And with just 2.8 seconds left in the game, and the score tied at 100, the Jazz were on the verge of history if they could pull off an amazing come-from-behind victory over Houston.
And that’s exactly what legendary point guard John Stockton did as he used a screen from fellow Hall of Famer Karl Malone and took one dribble before launching a deep 3-pointer that hit nothing but the bottom of the net as the Jazz beat the Rockets to clinch their first ever Western Conference title and NBA Finals berth.
“We were working our tails off for three years prior to that trying to get there,” Hornacek told the Salt Lake Tribune. When he jumped with joy on the Rockets’ court, he said, he was celebrating for a community. “Not just for the guys, but for the coaches, for the city of Salt Lake and the state of Utah to have that team finally get that.”
With this year marking the 20th Anniversary of its first Western Conference Championship, the Jazz will honor former players, coaches, trainers and front office staff during halftime of Wednesday’s game against the New York Knicks.
So with players in town, Stockton and Bryon Russell decided to recreate “The Shot.” And despite being in his jeans and with his shirt tucked in, Stockton came up clutch once again as he nailed his first attempt in front of media members.
