The NBA Draft always brings plenty of surprises and this year was no different.

The Phoenix Suns, with the franchise’s first No. 1 pick, selected Deandre Ayton. The former Arizona star was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year and the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, after averaging 20.1 points, 11.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. His 24 double-doubles tied for the second-most ever by a freshman in Division I history.

The Sacramento Kings then took Duke’s Marvin Bagley III with the No. 2 pick.  The 6-foot-11, 235-pound freshman he became just the third player in ACC history to lead the conference in scoring (21.0), rebounding (11.1) and shooting (61.4%) in his only collegiate season. Tim Duncan and Horace Grant were the other two.

Then the fireworks began.

With the No. 3 pick, the Atlanta Hawks took Luka Doncic, who many believe could end up being the best pick of the draft. The 6-foot-6 guard, who played for Real Madrid, ended up being traded to the Dallas Mavericks for the fifth overall pick (Oklahoma scoring sensation Trae Young), along with a 2019 first-round pick.

Michael Porter Jr., who was considered by many as the top candidates for the No. 1 overall pick last year, slid all the way down to No. 14 before the Denver Nuggets picked him up. Despite injury concerns in college this past season, the Nuggets viewed Porter’s potential as too great to pass up. Even after suffering a back injury in his debut for Missouri, the 2017 McDonald’s All-American and Mr. Basketball USA played in just three games for the Tigers. However, with incredible size and athleticism, Porter, if he can stay healthy, could very well be a star in the league.

The Utah Jazz, who struck gold last year by selecting Donovan Mitchell, took Duke’s Grayson Allen with the No. 21 pick. The 6-foot-5 combo guard averaged 15.5 points as a senior last season for the Blue Devils and shot 37% from beyond the arc. Allen, is also from the same team that Utah Jazz head coach Quin Snyder played for.

“We got the Duke connection,” Allen told ESPN. “I know he’s a great coach.”

“Adding a guy like him, elite scorer, great guy, great defender who plays unselfish—man, we got a good one in him and we’re excited,” added Mitchell.
