Good bye, good vibes!
After back-to-back overtime victories over Tennessee and USC, BYU’s positive momentum went out the window as No. 22 Washington walked out of LaVell Edwards Stadium with a dominating 45-19 victory.
Washington QB Jacob Eason threw for 290 yards and three touchdowns and the Huskies scored two touchdowns off three BYU turnovers and even returned a punt for a touchdown to coast to the victory.
The Huskies racked up 477 yards on offense compared to just 356 yards for the Cougars. Washington rushed for 187 yards for an average of 4.8 yards per carry. BYU managed just 79 yards for an abysmal 2.9 yards per carry.
BYU QB Zach Wilson did his best to keep the Cougars in the game as the sophomore threw for 277 yards and a touchdown. Wilson did have an interception to his name, however, it wasn’t his fault as Alevo Hifo tripped over his own feet and fell to the ground as Washington’s Asa Turner easily intercepted the pass near the BYU sideline.
Overall, it was a rough game for BYU, as three Cougar drives ended with turnovers and two others being failed fourth down conversions.
“They’re returning Pac-12 champs, they’re gonna be a really good team this season,” tight end Matt Bushman told reporters after the game. “But our mistakes just made them look like world beaters.”
From dropped balls, to penalties and turnovers, there wasn’t a lot of positives to take away from the game. Here’s how fans, players and coaches reacted after the loss:
We appreciate you cougar nation, more than you guys know! We’ll bounce back from this! #GoCougs

Thank you for coming out again cougar nation. That’s one of those games that you have to quickly forget and move on. That is not who we are as a team and we will learn and get better from this. Plenty of games to go and plenty more cheers ahead! #OnToToledo #GoCougs??

Against these type of caliber P5 opponents, BYU has to play an almost perfect game in order to hang. They are playing far from that with a costly turnover, undisciplined penalties, and dropped passes. Still a lot of football to go but BYU needs to respond on this drive.

BYU has lost 15 straight games scoring 20 pts or fewer.
Cougs have dropped 15 straight games with fewer than 100 rushing yds (79 today).
BYU has lost 16 consecutive games w/ negative avg starting field position margin (-5 yds today).
Sitake-era BYU now 3-13 w/ neg TO margin.

BYU's 79 rushing yards v. Washington are fewest in a game since running for 39 yards in a home loss v. USU last season; Sitake-era BYU is 0-14 with fewer than 100 rushing yards.
BYU's last win with fewer than 100 yards on the ground: 51-28 at USU in 2015 (74 rush).

This isn't the same BYU team that played last week.
WRs dropping balls, fumbles, DTs getting moved, stupid penalties.
Just doesn't look like the same team…— Hans Olsen (@975Hans) September 21, 2019
2 face masks…
A Big dropped ball…
Giving up a strip sack for a TD…
Off sides…BYU needs to clean some things up ASAP. Sloppy start.
Washington's QB, Eason looks solid to start this game.— Hans Olsen (@975Hans) September 21, 2019
UW QB's (Browning & Eason) vs BYU the last 6+ quarters (and still going):
43/47, 533 yards, 4 TD

Looks like BYU took the week off, I guess they didn’t need to practice. @kalanifsitake said just have fun. No contract no worries

BYU beats USC by dropping 8.
Whitt: plays manCal beats Washington by blitzing.

If BYU is going to drop 8 defenders and only rush 3 like that Eason is going to pick them apart. Great start on the first drive of the game!
If your going to drop 8 you cannot let WRs get uncontested releases. #UWvsBYU

BYU didn't play their best game today and the better team soundly won.
There were certain moments where Washington was just the better team, but still too many self inflicted wounds that ended any chance of BYU keeping the game close.

It’d be really nice if BYU for once didn’t have to play from behind the entire game.

BYU is wearing jerseys from the 60’s and playing like the teams from the 60’s as well. ?
— Ryan (@ryfish65) September 21, 2019
BYU went 38-58 in the 60s. Maybe not the best decade for a throwback.

Most thought we’d be 0-4 at this point. It’s been a great ride so far. Let’s can it with the negativity and cheer our boys on! #BYUFOOTBALL

Getting through those 4 games 2-2 is better than many thought.
On to Toledo. #BYUFOOTBALL— Pooh Pooh (@bigunclepooh) September 22, 2019
2-2 is a pretty good start to this season honestly. Would have liked 4-0 obviously, but we’ve already had some exciting games this season so far

A few things to take away.
1. Do not overreact Cougar fans! UW is probably the best team on our schedule this year and will be competing with UO and USC for the #pac12
2. Shooting yourself in the foot over and over will always result in an ugly loss
3. We'll be ok!#WashvsBYU— Brendon (@BrendonLarsen2) September 21, 2019
BYU Nation, we didn't get the results wanted today. Respect to Washington.
Thank you for welcoming me back home. I haven't been this happy in a long time.@BYUfootball @byuROC @BYUSportsNation @BYU pic.twitter.com/ITkXjCW5Pg
