With only one upset this past week, Tuesday’s Associated Press Top 25 poll didn’t see a lot movement.
Auburn made the biggest jump thanks to its come-from-behind victory over Oregon as the Tigers jumped from No. 16 to No. 11.
Following its 30-12 victory over BYU, Utah moved up from No. 14 to No. 13 in the poll. With Oregon’s loss and Washington dropping a spot in the poll, the Utes are now the highest ranked team in the Pac-12. Utah’s current ranking is the highest at this point of the season. In 2015, Utah jumped all the way to No. 3 with its 6-0 record in October before closing out the season at 4-3, to finish with a 10-3 record, including a bowl victory over BYU.
Utah’s strengths were highlighted in their win over BYU. The defense caused three turnovers — two interceptions and a fumble — all of which ended in points for the Utes. The offense was led by star running back Zach Moss, who ran for 187 yards and scored one touchdown. Read more about the season-opening victory here.
Despite a convincing 47-14 home victory over Eastern Washington, Washington fell one spot, due to its weak strength of schedule and the being over an FCS opponent. However, Huskies quarterback Jacob Eason still looked spectacular in the win as the junior threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns. Eason completed 27 of 36 passing attempts, and none of his passes were picked off. The Huskies looked impressive and hope to take that momentum into its next home game on Saturday against Cal.
The Oregon Ducks drop as a result of their 27-21 away loss against Auburn. The Ducks held a 21-6 lead late in the third quarter, but were unable to stop Auburn’s offense as they came back to win. The Tigers literally won in the last seconds as they scored a game-winning touchdown with nine seconds remaining in the game.
There are a total of five PAC-12 teams on the top 25, but Utah is the only team from the Pac-12 South on the list, and the highest ranked PAC-12 team. An excellent spot to be in for Utah after the first week, but there is still plenty of season left.
