After blowing a 3-1 series lead at home last year, Golden State made sure they finished business this time as the Warriors took down the Cleveland Cavaliers, 129-120, Monday night to win its second NBA title in three years.
The victory was sweet for Kevin Durant.
After years of heartbreak, the sharpshooter scored 39 points, had seven rebounds and added five assists to help lead his team to victory and win his first NBA title too.
Durant also picked up MVP honors — a unanimous pick — for his play in the Finals as he led the Warriors in scoring in every game. Throughout the series, the 10-year veteran averaged 35.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists, while shooting nearly 60 percent from the field.
Steph Curry chipped in with 34 points, 10 assists and six rebounds as the Warriors pulled away in the fourth quarter to take the series.
Draymond Green also had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and Klay Thompson added 11 points and five rebounds for the Warriors.
LeBron James makes history
“I left everything on the floor every game, all five games. So for me personally, I have no reason to put my head down,” LeBron James told reporters afterward.
The “King” put on quite the performance throughout the Finals as he became the first player in NBA history to average a triple-double. James, had 41 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists in the loss Monday, and ended the series averaging 33.6 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
Standing on the same court they were celebrating the franchise’s first NBA title, James walked out of the tunnel where he was met by point guard Kyrie Irving. The two embraced before Irving said,” We’ll be back, me and you.”
