Once again, No. 13 BYU led from start to finish as the Cougars went on the road and beat in-state rival Utah State, 34-20, in the battle for the Old Wagon Wheel.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 5-0 for the second consecutive year and just the 7th time in program history. So far this season, the Cougars haven’t trailed at any point and will look to keep that going against Boise State next Saturday.

With Jaren Hall still out with an injury, Baylor Romney picked up where he left off last week as the sophomore completed 15-of-19 passes for 187 yards and touchdown in the first half. Unfortunately, Romney didn’t get to play the second half after going down with what appeared to be a concussion with less than a minute to go in the second quarter.

Romney’s injury took some wind out of the sails for BYU’s offense in the second half behind third string QB Jacob Conover. After picking up more than 300 yards of offense in the first half, the Cougars managed just 150 in the second half. Much of that was running back Tyler Allgeier who had a career night.

The sophomore RB finished the night with a career-high 218 rushing yards and recorded his first three-touchdown game of his BYU career. It was the first time since 2018 that a BYU RB rushed for three touchdowns in a game. Allgeier also became just the 16th player in BYU history to rush for more than 200 yards.

After the game, players and coaches danced to the song “Wagon Wheel” as the Cougars picked up their 50th win in the rivalry.
