BYU just got one of its biggest wins in program history as the No. 8 Cougars rallied late for a thrilling 28-24 victory over No. 2 Notre Dame inside LaVell Edwards Stadium. Nobody, nationally, gave BYU a chance to win this game, with many expecting Notre Dame to walk in and dominate, and possibly blow BYU out.

With the game on the line late in the fourth quarter, Bear Bachmeier delivered like he always does, throwing the go-ahead touchdown pass with 1:47 remaining to Walker Lyons to take back the lead. The Cougar defense then needed a goalline stand to secure the victory.

Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr enginered a wild and crazy drive, converting several fourth downs to keep the drive alive — including a fourth-down completion to Micah Gilbert that put Notre Dame at the Cougar 9-yard line with under five seconds to go in the game. But Carr’s final pass fell incomplete in the back if the end zone, sealing the win for the Cougars.

Bachmeier accounted for three touchdowns, running for two and catching another, while throwing for 224 yards to lead the Cougars (6-0) to their first win over the Irish since 2004. The sophomore dual-threat quarterback also became the first BYU player since Steve Young (1983 Holiday Bowl) to pass for a TD, run for a TD, and catch a TD in the same game. His performance also made him the first FBS player in past 30 years with rushing touchdown, a passing touchdown and a receiving touchdown vs. an AP Top-5 team in the same game

Preston Rex added 66 yards on the ground as BYU improved to 6-0 for the third consecutive season — a program record.

The Irish entered the fourth quarter trailing by five after cutting into an 11-point halftime deficit with two field goals. Both scoring drives followed costly BYU mistakes — a muffed punt return and a failed fake punt. Notre Dame then took its first lead of the game when Jonaz Walton powered into the end zone on a 3-yard run with 9:31 remaining.

With the win, combined with all the chaos with so many Top 10 teams losing, The Cougars will certainly be in the Top 3, and could likely land at No. 1 or No. 2.
