Wake Forest University fired radio analyst Tommy Elrod on Tuesday after it was revealed that the former Demon Deacons player and assistant coach for more than a decade was responsible for leaking game plans to opponents for the past three years.

After Wake Forest hired Dave Clawson as its head coach in 2013, Elrod wasn’t retained on the coaching staff and went on to become part of the radio broadcast for the Demon Deacons.

The whole investigation started after documents were found at Cardinal’s Stadium when the Demon Deacons took on Lousiville last month. And after a month-long internal investigation, the school announced its findings:

  • Based on emails, text messages and phone records, Tommy Elrod, a radio announcer for Wake Forest football games, provided or attempted to provide confidential and proprietary game preparations on multiple occasions, starting in 2014.
  • No members of the Wake Forest athletic department, football staff or players were involved in any way in these actions.

I am extremely disappointed that our confidential and proprietary game preparation was compromised,” said Clawson. “It’s incomprehensible that a former Wake Forest student-athlete, graduate-assistant, full-time football coach, and current radio analyst for the school, would betray his alma mater. We allowed him to have full access to our players, team functions, film room, and practices. He violated our trust which negatively impacted our entire program.”

The Twittersphere has already begun calling the incident “WakeyLeaks,” and has provided some hilarious reactions to one of the craziest college football incidents in recent memory.
