No. 25 BYU won it’s 600th game in program history and did so in impressive fashion as the Cougars rolled to a 66-49 victory over Virginia Saturday night at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
The victory was special for a number of reasons, including a plethora of standout performances on offense, but the biggest was beating Bronco Mendenhall, the former Cougar coach, who left the program in search of greener pastures.
BYU fans finally got their revenge game against the former coach, and BYU players made sure fans weren’t disappointed.
Led by BYU running back Tyler Allgeier, the Cougars were unstoppable on offense as the team racked up 734 yards of total offense, had 36 first downs, averaged nearly 10 yards per play and did not have a turnover either.
Allgeier finished the game with career highs in both rushing yards and touchdowns. The sophomore ran for 266 yards and five touchdowns as the Cougars set several records in the win. Allgeier’s five touchdowns also tied a BYU single-game record, joining Jamaal Williams who had a similar performance against Toledo in 2016.
BYU-Virginia: College Football World Reacts To Record-Setting First Half
BYU and Virginia combined for 115 points, setting a record at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The previous high was 108 when BYU held on for a thrilling 55-53 win over Toledo in 2016. Both teams also combined for 1,322 yards of total offense.
BYU’s 66 points Saturday night were the most points scored against a Bronco Mendenhall-coached team. The previous high was 62 against No. 3 Clemson in the 2019 ACC championship game. Saturday’s high scoring game was the most against a P5 opponent for BYU and tied for the eighth most in program history.
Jaren Hall kept the Cougars balanced on offense as the dual-threat quarterback threw for a career-high 349 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 42 yards and touchdown in the win.
With the victory, the Cougars earned their fifth P5 win of the season to extend the school record. The high scoring shootout also had the nation talking as the Cougars and Cavaliers lit up the scoreboard.
