The third game was the charm.
Utah picked up its first win of the season with a 30-24 victory over Oregon State at Rice-Eccles Stadium Saturday night. The win also ended Utah’s two-game losing streak. The Utes nearly blew a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter, but held on with a defensive stand to end the game.
Utah scored on its first four possessions to take control of the game, however, what should have been easy touchdowns turned into field goals as Utah quarterback Jake Bentley missed on several throws in the end zone.
The Utes turned it on in the second half as Britain Covey scored two touchdowns to push the lead to 30-10 with 14 minutes left in the game. The wide receiver scored on an 8-yard touchdown and then added a 64 yard punt return for a touchdown in what would be Utah’s last score of the game.

Bentley had another average game as the senior completed just 18-of-27 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. Freshman running back Ty Jordan continued to shine as the 5-foot-7, 200-pounder rushed for a game-high 167 yards and a touchdown. Jordan carried the ball 27 times for an average of 6.2 yards per carry. He also added 22 yards receiving.
For the Utes, getting touchdowns in the red zone will likely be a major emphasis in practice this week after settling for field goals instead of touchdowns. It made the game much closer than it needed to be down the stretch.
For Oregon State, the Beavers came in depleted as they were without their starting quarterback and running back due to COVID-19 and recent injuries. Backup quarterback Chance Nolan made his first start and threw for 202 yards and a touchdown. He also added 36 yards on the ground, but it wasn’t enough for the Beavers.
Here’s how the media, fans and players reacted after the game:
3 Quick Thoughts from RES
1. Ty Jordan is going to be a problem for Pac12 Defenses for some time. Most dynamic Frosh since Covey
2. Covey, Kuithe, Jordan pick your poison. Offense can really be explosive w/Thompson/Nacua healthy
3. Short yardage offense major achilles heel#Utes— Bill Riley (@espn700bill) December 6, 2020

Jordan. Jordan. Kuithe. Rinse repeat. Throw a little Covey in there from time to time. It’s simple.

Attention: Covey is “low-key, sneaky athletic”.

Very happy for this team to have the chance to celebrate knowing how much unseen work and sacrifice have gone into this year. A true team victory, all around. Onward- https://t.co/ZLyD73CBWM

I’m scared of the Colorado game & I never expected to be saying that.

I can safely say I’d kill for Travis Wilson at QB right now.

I honestly feel bad for people that are pissed off and upset about this Utah game. It's not worth it. Not even remotely.
Especially when Utah just won the game.

Too bad Whit is wearing a mask…the gifs that would be coming out of his mouth would be glorious. He is hot.

Kyle Whittingham has been VERY critical and opinionated on the offensive performance tonight.
Upset about the field goals in the 1st half and the 4th quarter production. He hasn't minced words.— Hans Olsen (@975Hans) December 6, 2020
Kyle Whittingham
"I've got no confidence going for it on 4th and short after the last few games."— Hans Olsen (@975Hans) December 6, 2020
Utah vs Oregon State positive notes.
Brant Kuithe 8 catches 76 yards.
Britain Covey 6 touches for 63 yards.
Ty Jordan 27 carries for 167yds.
Special teams TD courtesy of Britain Covey.
Well timed sack by Mika Tafua to end the game.— Hans Olsen (@975Hans) December 6, 2020
"Too vanilla and non imaginative" is how Whittingham described the play-calling in the fourth quarter. Called it "unacceptable."

Could not be happier for the young guys that are getting that first W tonight. It’s been a very difficult experience for them so far, to get to experience what a win feels like is huge for them. The team has been through a lot, it was a tough game, but it’s a W.
