BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier had the best game of his career as the true freshman passed for a career-high 351 yards and a touchdown to lead No. 23 BYU to a dominant 38-24 victory over West Virginia Friday night at LaVell Edwards Stadiums. The game wasn’t as close as the score indicates.
With the win, the Cougars are now 5-0 for just the ninth time in school history, with four of those times having come under head coach Kalani Sitake.
BYU (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) rolled up 517 yards of total offense, had two takeaways, and held the Mountaineers to just 291 yards of total offense. Two of the touchdowns that West Virginia scored were off turnovers in which the team only had to go a combined 34 yards to score.

The scoring started early and often for BYU which was helped by the defense as corner Therrian Alexander III jumped a route near midfield and returned the interception 49 yards to set up Parker Kingston’s first touchdown of the day with a 1-yard score.
The speedster then scored again on the next offensive series as the junior hauled in a screen pass over the middle of the field, weaved through traffic, before sprinting untouched for a 54-yard score.
Kingston wasn’t the only one making big plays as fellow receiver Chase Roberts had his best game as a Cougar as the senior had a career-high 161 yards on four catches. He nearly had a touchdown on his 85-yard reception, however, he was taken down at the 4-yard line.
Big 12 Power Rankings: BYU, ASU, UC Climb — UCF, KU, WVU Fall (Week 6)
Roberts’ 161 yards are the most since Puka Nacua — who is on track to set numerous NFL records this season — had 168 yards again Baylor. In addition, the 85-yard reception by Roberts was the longest at BYU since 1996, when Steve Sarkisian was quarterback.
“You start throwing the ball a little more every game and, this game, it kind of blew up,” Roberts said. “I think now we’re a big threat in the pass game and teams got to prepare for that and that’s only going to open the box up for LJ and for our running backs. And I think we’re just a dangerous offense that’s hard to prepare for.”
The only downside on the night were two injuries to BYU’s best defensive players in Jack Kelly and Isaiah Glasker. It’s still unknown the severity of Kelly’s injury, as images showed him with and without a sling. Regarding Glasker, the team held him out towards as a precaution and due to the game being out of reach. Here’s hoping both of them can have quick recoveries because the Cougars will need them as they’ll soon start the most difficult part of their schedule in two weeks with games against Utah, Iowa State, Texas Tech and TCU.
Here’s a look at the reactions in BYU’s win over West Virginia:
161 yds for Roberts are the most since Nacua had 168 vs. Baylor.
BYU's D entered the game No. 7 allowing 3.94 yds per play. Against WVU, they allowed 4.47.

BYU has really got something with Bear Bachmeier.
Still not giving up the fight on the jersey number, though.

Bear Bachmeier's current 351 passing yards are the 3rd most by a freshman in a game. Only Matt Berry vs Wyoming in 2002 (360) and Tanner Mangum vs UConn in 2015 (365) had more.#BYUFootball #BYUvsWVU

Literally, the only thing I care about coming out of this game is Glasker and Kelly’s health going forward. Gotta have at least one and hopefully both of them to make it through the murderous Big12 schedule we have this month.

BYU Cougars looked really good….again.
Consistency.
WVU competed. Their next off season will be filled with intrigue.
BYU has a shot at CFP. Major hurdles will be Utah and Texas Tech.
Excitement once again is building in Provo.
