The streak is over.
BYU (11-1) picked up its first win in Florida and did so in style as the 13th-ranked Cougars led from start to finish in a 49-23 victory over UCF (6-4) in the Boca Raton Bowl.
Led by Zach Wilson, the Cougar offense rolled up a bowl and program record with 655 yards of total offense. BYU came in with an explosive offense and showed everyone why as the Cougars produced 34 first downs on just 73 offensive plays.
Wilson finished the night completing 26-of-34 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns. The dual-threat quarterback also ran for two touchdowns in the win. In what was likely his final game before declaring for the NFL Draft, Wilson continued to set records as he became BYU’s single-season completion percentage record holder (73.5%). Steve Young held the previous record at 71.3%.
While the Cougars were robbed of playing a New Years Six bowl game, the team showed the nation just how good they are in what was arguably the most dominating performance of the season.
Top 25: Where College Football Coaches Ranked BYU — Full Breakdown
UCF came in averaging more than 44 points per game, yet the Knights scored just 23, which included two late touchdowns in the second half when the game was well out of reach. With a Top 10 scoring defense, allowing just over 15 points per game, BYU’s defense shined once again. UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel completed just 21-of-45 passes for a season-low 217 yards and two touchdowns for the Knights. The sophomore came in averaging nearly 400 passing yards per game and had a stretch of nine straight incompletions.
While the defense has given up a lot of yards at times and allowing teams to go on 9-10 minute scoring drives, the team has been able to buckle down and get stops when they need to. The Cougars’ bend-but-don’t-break defense didn’t allow a team to score more than 26 points for the entire season. The last time that happened was back in 1978.
Oddsmakers set the over/under at 78.5 and BYU was on track to beat that by itself midway through the third quarter after going up 49-10, before calling off the dogs. In fact, the Cougars didn’t punt the ball until the fourth quarter and racked up more than 400 total yards in the first half. Head Coach Kalani Sitake stayed classy as he had Wilson take a knee inside the 5-yard line to end the game.
BYU running back Tyler Allgeier had another terrific performance as the sophomore had 19 carries for 173 yards and a touchdown. Isaac Rex continues to be a touchdown machine as the freshman hauled in five catches for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
Lopini Katoa added four catches for 90 yards, including an incredible diving grab in the first half. Neil Pau’u added five catches for 86 yards and a touchdown and Dax Milne chipped in with seven catches for 70 yards.
Here’s how the media, fans and players reacted after the game:
Zach Wilson of @BYUfootball is the only FBS player in the last 25 years to …
-throw for 400+ yards
-complete 75.0+ percent of his passes
-pass for 3+ TDs
-rush for 2+ TDs
-catch a pass… all in the same game.

I bet you BYU would come back and play UAB Saturday if they asked. All they wanted to was play ball this year. This is a damn good BYU team!!
— Dustin Fox (@DustinFox37) December 23, 2020
Zach Wilson making himself some (more) money tonight. What a way to finish your college career. Love to see BYU, who was fearless in playing when everyone else out west gave into the fear, finishing a fantastic season.
— Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) December 23, 2020
Heck of a season for BYU, finishes 11-1 with that one loss coming by one yard. Will certainly finish in the top 15.
Would have loved to see this team against the original schedule with P5 teams. I'd put this BYU team up against almost anybody in the country.

BYU outscores UCF just 14-13 in 2nd half. Kyle Whittingham unimpressed! Sources say he’s dropping BYU to 25th in next Coaches Poll with Arizona (0-5) sliding in at No. 24.#GoCougs #BYU #CFB #BYUFOOTBALL pic.twitter.com/ca5kR5XwZp

From 2016-2019 Boise St., UCF, & San Diego State were 2nd, 3rd, and 4th among G5 schools in win pct. 3 Min into Q3 BYU has outscored them 121-41 this season. A 1-yd loss to a top 15 team across the country on last minutes notice shouldn't take away from how great this team was.

The throws that you're seeing from Zach Wilson tonight is what he's been doing all season. The defenses he's faced will be brought up, but good throws are good throws and the one's he's making are easily NFL level ones.
